The Tooele Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1916. The Auxiliary provides support to the Coast Guard through a range of activities, including education and personnel training, law enforcement assistance, and coastal defense. In addition to providing essential services to the community, the Auxiliary is also an important part of maritime history and culture in Tooele. Throughout its history, the Auxiliary has been a vital part of the Tooele community. For example, in 1916, when the Auxiliary was founded, there were only five Coast Guardsmen in Utah. Today, there are over 1,000 members of the Auxiliary here in Tooele. This growth can be traced back to wheninitially just four officers and men served aboard HMCS Athabasca during World War I. The Auxiliary continued its growth during World War II withthe addition of six more officers and men.
