The Taylorsville National Guard is a unit of the United States Armed Forces that was formed in 1912. Originally stationed in Cedar City, Utah, the unit became an all-volunteer brigade in 1916. The brigade was redesignated as the Taylorsville Brigade in 1948 and then as the Taylorsville National Guard Reserve Unit in 1959. The brigade's current name comes from its location within Taylorsville, UT, which is named for Major General John S. Taylor (1838-1910), who served as Commanding Officer of the 1st Utah Infantry Regiment during World War I and later commanded the 1st Cavalry Division during World War II. In 1971, the brigade became a detachment of the 40th Infantry Division and remains part of that division to this day. The Taylorsville National Guard has fielded units throughout Utah since 1912 when it was organized as an all-volunteer brigade under command of Brigadier General James H. Johnston. At its inception, the unit consisted only of men over 21 years old who volunteered their services to defend our state against any potential threats from abroad or on home soil. This volunteer force proved itself time and again by performing various tasks such as providing security at local fairs and festivals, participating in military exercises sponsored by neighboring states, manning frontier outposts and patrols, guarding important installations such as prisons and forests surrounding Salt Lake City, participated in searchlight displays off Interstate 15 near Provo Canyon outside Sandy Mountain Resort ski resort - all while keeping our residents safe! In 1916, with World War I looming large onthe horizon, Majorette Colonel Robert Ladd assigned his regiment to serve with distinction alongside other units across Utah Valley throughout hostilities ensued raged across Europe theatrocities took place daily including Anzio Beach Parade Massacre; however despite these horrendous events taking place right next door some soldiers within Col Ladd’s regiment decided to give up their individual rights & become members of The United States Army! What began as a small group of young soldiers within one battalion quickly grew into what we now know as one of America’s most proud national guard units! As World War II unfolded both domestically & abroad our country saw new challenges unfolding before her including Pearl Harbor; however even though many Americans were4decidedly frightened there were also countless patriotic individuals throughout Utah Valley who refused to let their spirit be broken by fear or hatred; instead they chose to fight for their Country no matter what! During those dark days prior to D-Day American troops fought bravely side-by-side with British troops on Normandy battlefields earning numerous awards for heroism none moreso than 3rd Lieutenant Donny Bowers who helped lead his platoon through thickest enemy fire singlehanded becoming posthumously awarded U.S Military Cross!!! After WWII ended our nation faced significant social changes resulting in increased manpower shortages Nationwide so Majorette Colonel Wm Jenson assigned his troop(later renamed 4th Infantry Regiment)to provide logistical support not only for The Department Of Defense but also for State Troops serving concurrently alongside Federal Law enforcement officers called SWAT teams!!!
