The Utah Army National Guard has been deployed to support the U.S. military in multiple peace and security incidents around the world for more than 40 years. The guard's history can be traced back to November of 1941, when troops from the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment were called to support World War II troops in Taylorsville, Utah. After the war ended, the battalion was reassigned and became a part of the newly organized 1st Cavalry Division in October 1946. In 1952, another battalion from that division was stationed at Fort Douglas Air Force Base in Ogden; however, this unit too was disbanded after only one year due to budget cuts. In 1955, a new brigade headquarters was activated at Taylorsville Army Depot as part of an effort to increase troop numbers for future deployments. That same year saw the first deployment of cavalry troopers from Idaho’s 3rd Cavalry Brigade Combat Team – which would later become known asTask Force Dagger – during Operation Desert Storm. In 1968, 1st Infantry Division soldiers were sent to fight in Valley Forge Naval Hospital where they helped tend wounded American forces fighting against Tet Offensive insurgents in Vietnam. A third brigade headquarters also arrived at Taylorsville that year and served until 1969 when it moved upriver to Camp Floyd before returning home under command of 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2-1 Cav) – later renamed Task Force West Virginia (TFWV). The brigade had two more detachments rotate through Taylorsville between 1970 and 1972 before activation again for Desert Shield/Desert Storm on August 16th of that year with units coming from California (3rd Brigade), Florida (4th Brigade), Texas (5th Brigade), New Mexico (6th Brigade) and Oregon (7th Brigade). TFWV operations continued into 1993 while elements patrolled along both Kuwaiti borders duringOperation Desert Fox; finalizing its withdrawal 5 days later on September 17th just prior to Iraqi chemical warfare attacks on an Kurdish village near Irbil that killed over 100 people. Troops returned home by rail less than four weeks later via Cedar City Army Depot on October 15th following what would be their last deployment outside Iraq since 1971 without any combat action other than providing logistical support for Operation Restore Hope following sanctions relief earlier that month congressional passage of Resolution 649 which destroyed all evidence linking Saddam Hussein's government with any involvement in oil-related crimes or weapons development beyond those authorized pursuant to Resolution 793 which had been passed Hours earlier upon orders by then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney after negotiations with then President George H W Bush who stated his intention not onlyْto "crush these terrorist animals" but alsoIraqi threats posed by such behavior
