Springville is a small town in Utah, located on the Wasatch Front. It was founded in 1874 and has been around since the early 1800s. The town was named after Asa Springville, who donated land to the town and served as its first mayor. The population of Springville peaked at around 7,000 in 1920 but has decreased over the years due to waves of immigration and local industrialization. Today, it has a population of around 1,500. The earliest known inhabitants of Springville were Native Americans who lived along the Wasatch Front before migrating westward in search of new lands in what is now Colorado and Utah. In 1847, Brigham Young issued an order authorizing Mormon settlers to move into present-day Springville for protection from possible Mexican colonists working towards reaching Salt Lake City by way of the Arkansas River. By 1854, spring had sprung up near where Springerville would later be located and soon afterward began trading with nearby Ogden for goods sourced from theWasatch Front Range. In 1865, when General James KIng George arrived at Fort Bridger on horseback to sign Treaty No. 8 with Great Basin Paiute Indians living east of Cedar City, he discovered that much ()of what he had expected would be available within his original boundaries were instead located north-west within present-day Springville limits thus ending any chance that this land could ever become part of Utah; moreover KIng George immediately ordered all non-Mormon residents out of their towns until further notice (). From then on until 1872 when Brigham Young forced all Mormons out of Nauvoo (and most other eastern Iowa settlements), many pioneers - especially men - moved to Springville seeking refuge from violence and persecution coming from Nauvoo onwards (). Many women also followed suit finding refuge here following Joseph Smith’s expulsion from Nauvoo (). A man by the name of John Witherspoon led a group called “The Mormon Battalion” westward through Wyoming Territory during winter 1784–85 which included elements including women and children () . After escaping across state lines into Nebraska Territory without incident (), Witherspoon relocated his family toSpringvillenot long after other Mormons had done so (); however his wife died giving birth thereto in February 1800 (. When Brigham Young finally expelled all Latter Day Saints eastbound via Missouri River crossing on January 12th1870 (), those remaining westward traveled through Purgatory Canyon (), Rocky Mountain Country () before finally arriving at Winter Quarters outside Independence,, Iowa (). There they built a stockade Cemetery () while awaiting assistance from President Grant in establishing Deseret Valley Colony (). On April 9th1871 they received news that $2 million() had been raised towards building a colony near Stroudsburg,, Pennsylvania were they were finally allowed entry (). Over time many more families crossed over into America via these routes not just through Purgatory Canyon but also by wagon train traveling down Weber Creek each year past Independence leading up directly to Nevada or California
