The Springville National Guard Museum is proud to offer a history of the national guard gift in Utah. The first national guard unit in Utah was organized on November 15, 1861 under the name of the “Utah Volunteer Infantry” and it served as a part of the Union army during the American Civil War. The Valentine County Volunteers were organized on January 1, 1862 and they also served in Union army. In 1864, these units were combined into one brigade and this brigade was later renamed as Third Brigade, First Division (Utah) Army Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant. On July 24, 1868, President Andrew Johnson called for all states to raise militias and on August 9th Congress approved Lincoln’s call for 1 million men to be drafted into service during the Civil War. This raised an initial pool of 3 million soldiers that would serve through both World Wars I and II. On February 17th 1915 Congress passed An Act To Authorize Appropriations For The Support Of Military Forces In Territories And Insular Possessions By The Department Of Interior And Other Agencies And For Other Purposes (Public Law No: 31). This law authorized $5 million for military appropriations each year from 1915-1917 inclusive by order of President Woodrow Wilson until his death in 1921 without any appropriation being made subsequent to that date. A total of 2,313 guardsmen died during World War I while serving with distinction with over 350 medals awarded including 6 Distinguished Service Crosses (DSC) and 202 Medals Of Honor (MOH). During World War II there was no significant mobilization but due to Pearl Harbor attack troops were called up on September 25th 1939 after Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in more than 100 engagements totaling 514 Dietrich Awards which honored members of infantry battalions who had performed gallant or distinguished services after December 7th 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Base United States forces responded by mobilizing netherlandsink commandos led by Lieutenant Colonel Harry Truman

Springville is a small town located in San Juan County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Springville is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 by Mormon pioneers who had come from Illinois to stake a claim for the new territories acquired from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, Springville became an incorporated community when it merged with nearby Hyrum and Sidney townships. The name of the first Postmaster General of Utah was named George W. Bushman aftersprings of Springville Township which he served as postmaster from 1868 to 1870. In 1916, Springville erected a large frame schoolhouse known as "The Star" on North Main Street. It served as the local public school until 1957 when it was replaced by a modern building which still stands today. From 1914 to 1916, Harry Smeaton served as Mayor of Springville and later became its first City Marshal. However, due to financial constraints, the school district never fully implemented this idea and instead opted for smaller schools throughout the city limits rather than consolidating into one large school. In 1907, theSpringville Improvement Company was organized to provide services such as water supply, electric lights, and streetlights to the town. The company ceased operations in 1967.
