Springville is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1874 by settlers from New York City and settled on high ground near the present-day site of Springville Cemetery. The name "Springville" was derived from the spring that supplied water to the community. In 1878, an oil well was sunk in Springville and became known as the " SPRINGVILLE OIL WELL". In 1902, Springville voters passed a proposal to rename their community after President Grover Cleveland. The name change came about because residents began referring to Cleveland as "Governor" rather than simply "President". In 1911, a new water system was built in Springville which served all of southeast Utah and parts of north-central Colorado. This system included a pipeline that ran beneath Main Street and led to an underground reservoir called 'The Well'. A major landmark in Springville is Sprague Park which contains several murals painted by local artists during the 1930s depicting life in early Mormon towns such as Provo (now Provo) and Logan (now Logan). These murals were added to Sprague Park in 1938 by Mayor Earnest Folsom who wanted to show support for his city's growing art scene.

Smith set out from Oregon with his family to find a new home for himself and his children after moving from their previous home in Beavercreek, Ohio five years earlier. Finding little success finding land east of the Rocky Mountains until finally locating a piece of property that would become Springville on May 28th of that year it became America's first established town west of the Rockies! What followed were years of hard work and dedication from many who helped make SpringVILLE what it is today- an thriving community with nearly twenty thousand residents! Early pioneers such as Mr. Smith had no idea that they were creating one of America’s most important agricultural capitals; today’s farmers have paid homage to him through various institutions like Eastern Washington University (EWU), which he endowed in 1902; Brigham Young University-Hawaii East (BYU-HE) which opened its doors in 1959; and most recently, The George C. Smith Museum which celebrates not only Mr. Smith’s life but also his legacy as an educator and civic leader whose influence will continue into our future!
