Springville, Utah is a city in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 3,347 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Weber County. The name "Weber" comes from John Wesley Hardin and his wife Anna Maria Weber. The town was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers on land that had been purchased from the Ute people for $4 per acre. In 1852, about one-third of the town's population came from Salt Lake City when Brigham Young led an LDS migration westward to engage in agricultural pursuits and build a new Jerusalem on this territory. By 1870, Springville had become an important stop on wagon trains supplying Cache Valley with goods needed for farmers growing crops near Ogden and Provo. In 1896–97 Governor Cecil Condon designated Springville as the official site of Weber County's courthouse after surveys showed that Independence Hall had served as such since its construction in 1849 but no other courthouse existed in or near Springville. On July 12, 1897, Judge Rufus Hanks presided over the dedication ceremonies at Independence Hall which included speeches by Mayor Wm. Averill (1853-1919), Justice James Moyle (1863-1936), Sheriff Jno Ewing (1892-1964) and Captains George Neely (1877-1938) and Hiram Sorensen (1875-1964). This event marked not only the establishment ofSpringville as county seat but also became known as "the first courthouse building." In 1925 Ezra Taft Benson organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Springville which grew rapidly until it merged with another large LDS congregation located several miles to the east at Cedar City in 1938 to form what is now known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Utah Division. From 1928 until his death in 1985 President Spencer W Kimball directed all church operations within Utah through his First Presidency Office located atofthe Springvalesite. In 1988 Congress passed legislation designating Springerville Municipal Airport for general aviation use providing spring Valley residents with improved access to interstate travel options. Today there are many churches and businesses located throughout downtownSpringvillewitha focuson cultural attractions including arts and crafts shows along Main Streetand several fine restaurants.
