The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the Utah Volunteer Fire Department. The first coast guard station was built on the south side of Springville, Utah. In 1916, a second coast guard station was built on the north side of Springville. In 1927, the Coast Guard Station at Springville became a permanent station with a hangar and dock for boat launch and other activities. In 1935, the Coast Guard Station at Springville was renamed the Coast Guard Station at Cottonwood Heights after Cottonwood Heights, Utah which had been donated by Mrs. Alice Payne Knight. In 1951, it was decided that all coast guard stations should be combined into one command center under one roof. This new command center would become known as Headquarters and Records Center (HRC). The HQ & HRC also served as the administrative headquarters for all departmental commands in Salt Lake County until 1972 when they were moved to Draper City near Logan Airport. The Coast Guard has always been an important part of local communities in Springville and throughout Utah due to their efforts in patrolling our waters and providing law enforcement services during times of emergency or crisis. The CGN was one of several entities transferred from DHS’s predecessor agencies including Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration & Custom Enforcement (ICE) on January 1st 2003 into DHS under this new organization. Today, Coast Guardsmen are deployed all over America keeping our coastline safe from pirate activity and other potential threats both at home AND abroad!
