Naval deployments have a long and colorful history in Spanish Fork, Utah. The city is home to the Navy's Pacific Fleet Headquarters, which has been located here since 1907. The city also hosts the largest amphibious dock landing in the Western hemisphere (the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum). Spanish Fork was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as a small farming community on the edge of what is now Provo, Utah. By 1865, Spanish Fork had become an important port on the Great Salt Lake River and its economy grew with shipping and ranching. In 1917, when World War I began, Spanish Fork became one of several Utah cities to pledge support for the war effort. Spanish Fork's navy detachment was activated on November 10th of that year as part of USS "Utah"s Amphibious Force (PF) 3rd Battalion (Amphibious Unit) 1st Regiment (1st Marine Division), commanded by First Lieutenant Harry Wulfenbach III. That detachment served as ashore security for naval units assigned to various military campaigns around the world including World War II's Battle of Midway and Operation Husky. In 1949, when Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor, American warships were mobilized along with Chilean Marines to provide coastal defense against possible invasion from Japan. In 1951-1952 operations supportingOperation Cedar Falls took place off Chile's coast; these operations included unilateral nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll using Surinam-class submarines operated by Naval Squadron 4 under Commander Jens Christensen & his staff.) On January 7th 1952 USS "Los Angeles" collided with SS "Erie" while Operating in Hawaiian waters; both vessels sustained heavy damage however both men survived without injury.. After conducting extensive repairsUSS "Los Angeles" returned to service on February 26th 1952 operating out of San Pedro Gulf.. During this time Captain John Fusco relieved Captain Harry Wulfenbach who later died from a heart attack while commanding USS “Laramie” during Operation Wildfire..Captain Fusco would eventually be promoted to Rear Admiral after his retirement from active duty at sea ..During his career Captains Fusco & Wulfenbach are credited with developing alternate methods for launching torpedoes underwater as well as many other improvements which ultimately made naval warfare more efficient ..After retiring from active duty he joined McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation where he played an instrumental role in developing new aircraft technologies such as high altitude cruise missiles...He retired from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation on December 31st 2003 having achieved the rank of Commodore.. Spanish Fork was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as Fort Bridger. The fort served as a military outpost for ten years before being abandoned in 1853. Spanish Fork was named after Francisco Juana de la Cruz y Otero, who had been governor of New Mexico from 1784 to 1786 and president of Mexico from 1800 to 1805. The first post office was established at Spanishfork on November 20, 1850, under the name Fort Bridger. A second post office called French Flourtown was established on December 21, 1850; it ceased operations June 15, 1861 due to lack of mail service southward from Provo City. In 1875 Spanish Fork became an incorporated town when it merged with French Flourtown and other towns in Davis County form what is now known as the Utah Valley region (later renamed The West Side). In 1907 Spanish Fork received a charter from the Utah Legislature to become an independent city pursuant to findings that its citizens desired more autonomy than provided by neighboring Davis County towns which were then part of the Unified School District (USD).
