Spanish Fork, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Spanish Fork is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. It was founded in 1853 by Mormon settlers from Nauvoo, Illinois. Spanish Fork is named after the San Felipe Mission Santa Fé de Bogota del Norte which was established in 1795 by José Joaquín de Seguin and his father Francisco Miguelsa. Spanish Fork's first post office opened in 1854. The town grew rapidly around the LDS temple built near its center in 1858-59. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Spanish Fork and it had become an important transportation and commercial center for central Kane County. In 1862, Mexican troops under General Antonio López Montoya invaded Utah Territory and burned several settlements including Spanish Fork; this event is considered to be the beginning of the Mexican Wars in Utah Territory. The Mormons abandoned their settlements throughout central Kane County during these wars; however, some small groups remained until 1865 when all but three of them returned to Nauvoo, Illinois with most of their possessions (the exception being La Salle College). In 1865-66 Englishman John Coddington surveyed what would become Kane County while on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from Liverpool, England; he named many local features after British explorers such as Elisha Swayne who explored parts of present day Mexico before reaching California in 1769 A.D.; George Cosnett who discovered Nevada Territory east of modern Provo on December 14th 1809 A.D.; James Bridgwater who explored parts of what are now Utah and Wyoming during 1840-46 Aduanaun Expedition; Arthur Wellesley Cumming Mapmaker who circumnavigated Australia on HMS Resolution during 1830s while stationed at Sydney Cove; David Whitcomb Riley Jr., one half brother to Brigham Young who became second president—and others following his instructionsisphere published "A Topographical Dictionary Of North America" (1839), volume 2 among other places name[s]. Spanishfork was laid out platted October 23rd 1868 by Lorenzo Snow with lots measuring 6 rods wide x 4 rods long & sold at $25 per acre payable within 24 months or face foreclosure proceedings commenced against him by party purchasing land adjoining Juanita field & divide same into lots numbered starting with lot number 1
Spanish Fork is a city in Sevier County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Spanish Fork is the county seat of Sevier County. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and named for Santiago de la Frontera (Santiago del Norte), an explorer who first visited this area in 1824. Spanish Fork was originally located on the banks of the Sevier River adjacent to present-day Spanish Fork Canyon. The original townsite included two square miles (5 km2). After gold was discovered near Cache Valley in 1850, settlers began to arrive from all over Utah looking for rich veins of nuggets and silver. In 1852, they organized as a town and built a courthouse, jail, school and other public buildings. In 1860, Brigham Young designated Spanish Fork as the territorial capital of Wasatch County because he thought it would be more beneficial to administer justice there than Provo or Cedar City which were then theVILLE capitals of Utah Territory. The first Constitution of Utah was adopted here on July 16, 1860; it declared that “the Government of this Territory shall be administered by Mormons under their own system” and provided for elections by popular vote rather than through an appointed legislature. On October 6th same year Congress passed legislation establishing a territorial government with its own judiciary and general authorities apart from those granted to Salt Lake City pursuant to Treaty 8 between Great Britain and America; however Spanish Fork continued as the territorial capital until January 1st 1861 when Provo became the new Territorial Capital following US admission into World War II via Executive Order 9471
