South Salt Lake, Utah is a beautiful town that was founded in 1847 by Mormons. The community is located in Davis County, Utah on the edge of the Wasatch Mountains. South Salt Lake has a population of about 45,000 people and covers an area of about 102 square miles. South Salt Lake’s history can be traced back to the 1800s when it was part of the Spanish Peaks Dongan Station Settlement. The settlement was destroyed by Indians in 1847 and never rebuilt. In 1865, Brigham Young founded Farmington away from South Salt Lake and this led to the growth of both towns. farmington had a population of 10,000 people by 1870 and south saltlake had a population of 25,000 people by 1880. When World War I began in 1914, many Mormon soldiers were called up to serve in Europe but at some point most members left South Salt Lake for military service. After World War I ended in 1918, many new Mormons moved into South Salt Lake and this led to the rise of SouthSaltLake as an economic center during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1936, LDS Church president Spencer W Kimball announced that all children born north of Ogden were automatically baptized into the LDS church so there was no need for large families in older settlements like Farmington orSouthSaltLake. Over time many small settlements such as Northcliffe/ Indian Hills developed around these two towns while others such as West Jordan emerged after they lost their stakes within LDS Church headquarters (See “The evaporation process: A case study from Provo”). Today much remains unchanged from when SouthSaltLake first came together with Farmington over 100 years ago; however recent renovations have kept much alive including its architecture which features Tracyite stone architecture typical for early 19th century Mormon settlements around these parts (See photo below). Today despite its relatively recent history it still retains many charms including its diverse demographics including numerous Anglo-Saxon Protestants who live here today along with Latter Day Saints who also call themselves Mormons (See photo below). Many downtown businesses still provide services such as retail stores, restaurants, cafes etc., making it one of the more vibrant communities in Davis County according to county officials. It is also home to several universities including Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU), Weber State University and Utah Valley University among others which offer educational opportunities for residents throughout Davis County as well as Provo itselfwhich offers several high-end businesses along with excellent job opportunities for locals just outside downtown Provo
