He and his wife, Anna Webster Hinkle, were the first white families to live in what is now South Salt Lake. They started a grocery store and church on Second Street and later built a home on Third Street. The Webb family owned and operated the grocery store until it was closed in 1957. The Hinkle’s also ran a poultry farm out of their home until it was sold in 1955. In 1907, John Fenton purchased 125 acres of land that included part of today’s central business district of SouthSaltLake. He called the tract “Fenton Prairie” and built his headquarters thereon as well as other homes and businesses including an opera house, theater, grocery store, post office and bank (the first bank west of the Mississippi River). Fenton served as Mayor ofSouthSaltLake from 1911-1915 and 1917-1920; he also served as County Clerk from 1915-1918; he died in 1920 at age 73 years old. In 1933-1934 Charles Bigham established himself as one of Utah’s most successful businessmen with his purchase of 1 million dollars worth of real estate comprising much of downtownSouthSaltLake(later moving it uptown).Bigham became involved with many civic organizations including being presidentofUtahPublic Utilities Commissionfrom1967to1974and chairmanofUtahState BankFrom1971to1982.(he also served on numerous city councils throughout Utah)Bigham died suddenly at age 83 years old on November 12th 1984.) On January 15th 1958 Mrs Juana Castro Gonzalez married Harold Wetherbee who had been born in US soil only 4 months earlier on December 4th 1953! They resided at 5111 S State St until they moved their residence to 6001 S State St where they currently reside! Harold Wetherbee has been mayor pro tempore since October 2015!

South Salt Lake, Utah is a city located in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. The population was 30,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo–Orem metropolitan area. South Salt Lake is one of two cities in the town of Ogden and Ogden Township that are both considered to be within the Greater Orem-Layton Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become South Salt Lake was Levi Holland on August 15, 1847. He built a cabin on what is now First Street and Sycamore Drive. Holland's son John Fenton erected a log cabin on what became Eighth Avenue in 1850 and named it "Fenton". In 1853, Brigham Young called for Latter-day Saints to gather around him in southcentral Utah to purchase land for their new temple site. The group purchased 640 acres (2 km²) from James Ewing at $5 per acre ($/ha). They laid out streets and townships and named them after apostles: Apostles Andrew Johnson (Alter), Lorenzo Snow (Lumen), George Atherton (Atherton), Hyrum Smith (Hyrum Smith), Wilford Woodruff (Wilford Woodruff), Orson Hyde (Orson Hyde). In 1863, when LDS Church President Joseph Fielding Smith dedicated the templesite near present day South Salt Lake City on Mesa Verde Boulevard, he also called upon all Saints living east of Interstate 80 to come southeast and join him there “inasmuch as they are willing to help us build up this great work which God has given us” On July 9th 1861 Brigham Young again called for Saints in southern Utah who were scattered throughout Weber County to unite with those living northward on Bearskin Gulch Road as they awaited discovery of an opening through which they could travel southward into Mexico On September 11th 1861 over 5200 people had gathered around President Young at Mountain Meadows Village when word arrived from Nauvoo that news had reached General Albert Sidney Johnston that Confederate reinforcements had crossed the border into Mexico and were marching northwest toward Stroudsburg Junction where he believed his forces might encampment before continuing their march southward along Federal Road across Cooke Valley until reaching Provo or even further east if necessary The large gathering at Mountain Meadows Village quickly dispersed with many leaving hastily before orders arrived not to cross Missouri River or else face military retaliation The lack of visual evidence whether any such crossing actually occurred or if Mormon troops simply turned back after learning about it means little but established history suggests otherwise Brigham Young ordered his army home without achieving significant political objectives beyond consolidating power within LDS hands
