South Salt Lake is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,057 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo–Orem, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a small settlement on the east side of South Salt Lake Creek in 1847 and grew rapidly during the late 19th century when gold fields were discovered in nearby Kane County. By 1910, South Salt Lake had become one of the most heavily populated towns in Kane County. Despite its growth rate, South Salt Lake has never achieved a significant level of development or commercial success. In recent years, however, some redevelopment and new development has begun to take place within the town boundaries. In 2003, South Salt Lake became an anchor city for Brigham Young University's Provo Campus expansion which added over 100 acres (40 hectares) of land to BYU campus across North State Street from downtown Provo. This area has since seen several high-rise buildings built on top of ancient sandstone quarries and historic Mormon farms near what was once called "thevil" – an abandoned salt mine that served as an early regional center for agriculture and mining operations in south central Utah. Today's South Salt Lake is home to many businesses including two grocery stores (Albertson's/Eagle Express), two restaurants (Pizza Hut and Panda Express), three banks (Provident Bank & Trust Company, First National Bank & Trust Company and US Bancorp), four elementary schools (Kane City Elementary School; North State Elementary School; East Valley Elementary School; Jackson Middle School), three junior high schools (Salt lake Junior High School; West Valley Junior High School; Mountain View Intermediate School) and one college campus belonging to Brigham Young University-Provo Campus (Brigham Young Univ.-Provo).
