South Ogden is one of the most significant towns in Weber County and its history can be found dating back to 1869 when it was founded by Mormons who were fleeing polygamy. For many years South Ogden was known as "The Hillbilly melting pot." Today it is a thriving community with a rich history that has been passed down through families for generations. In 1869, Mormon colonists fleeing polygamy founded what would become South Ogden on the banks of the Deseret River. The original settlers were white farmers from Illinois and Missouri who had come to provide labor for Brigham Young's new church establishment in Utah. By 1870, however, Indian conflict had forced most of these early settlers out of the area and replaced them with African Americans from Arkansas who had also fled religious persecution in their home states. In 1871 local LDS leaders decided to rename South Ogden after General George A.] Smith—the founder of Mormonism—in order to emphasize that this place was not just about Latter-day Saints but about Ute Indians as well. The town quickly developed into an important center for Native American trade and commerce due to its location on the main route between Salt Lake City and Denver. In addition to its role as an economic hub, South Ogden also became known for its substantial number of Native American converts who came here during the late 19th century following widespread anti-Mormon hysteria across North America. This atmosphere led some African Americans to integrate into white society while others built their own businesses within the black community in nearby Provo or Logan Heights. One major reason why South OgDEN has remained an important cultural node throughout its centuries-long history is because it has always been accessible both physically and emotionally.
