The history of the Coast Guard in South Ogden, Utah began with a few men who volunteered to help protect the coast. After World War I, the need for a better means of transportation on the ocean made it necessary for more people to volunteer their time and money to help shape this important organization. In 1933, Congress designated South Ogden as the first Coast Guard Station in Utah. The station was built on land donated by Mrs. Hilda Kapp and served as a training ground for new Coast Guardsmen until 1946 when the Coast Guard Station at Cedar City was established. The original mission of the Cedar City station was to keepNavigators safe from navigational hazards along the coastline and Berry Islands while they drilled for oil off Bluff Reef in 1940; but soon enough other missions were added, including providing assistance during flood events in 1951 and 1957; conducting search-and-rescue operations during hurricanes Gilbert in 1992 and Jeanne in 1995; and response to earthquakes that struck North America between 1987 and 1990. Today, with over 100 officers and women assigned to duty at South Ogden’s Coast Guard Station, we continue our history of service by helping keep our community safe. South Ogden, Utah is a town in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. South Ogden was founded in 1847 by James Worthy and his family as a small settlement on the banks of the Great Salt Lake. In 1865, South Ogden became an incorporated city and named for its original location near the present-day intersection of North First Street and East Temple Avenue. The first settlers in South Ogden were James Worthy and his family who arrived from England in 1847. James Worthy's brother John Worthy also settled in what is now South Ogden about this time. By 1850, there were 10 families living in South Ogden with James Worthy as their leader. On February 26th of that year, James Worthy sold 640 acres (2 km²) of land to Brigham Young for $10 per acre ($ today). This land would later become known as Brigham Young University Campus Site #1 (BYU CS#1). In 1865, when South Ogden became an incorporated city it was renamed for its original location near the present-day intersection of North First Street and East Temple Avenue which bordered on Provo City at that time. The first mayoralty office was held by Hyrum Smith who served until 1870 when George Romney took office after being elected Mayor pro tem by the city councilmembers without any debate or vote due to then-Governor Cumming's vetoing power over municipalities within Weber County subject to Cumming's authority as governor at that time. After three terms as mayor Pro Tem (1870-72), Romney succeeded Hyrum Smith as Mayor on January 2nd, 1872 following Governor Cumming's death at age 73 years old during a hunting trip to Bear Valley northeast of Provo.] On November 5th of that same year LDS Church President Lorenzo Snow announced plans to build a temple in downtown Salt Lake City using money raised through endowment ceremonies being held throughout December across all branches of the LDS Church including those located outside of Salt Lake City proper – making South Ogdon one stop along this eastern expansion path[]. Work began immediately on site designated BYUCS#1 which would eventually become home to both LDS Church president Joseph Fielding Smith’s private chapel [LDS Chapel] and also serve as headquarters for many other activities related thereto such ASMENDORF center built thereon adjoining BYUCS#1 during latter days OFSTED accredited school operated therefrom by local parents/guardians hired therein pursuant thereto]
