Navy gifts have always been a part of the Saratoga Springs community. The Saratoga Naval and Marine Museum has a long history of hosting Navy gift shows, fundraisers, and other events to support the military and sailors in our community. Gifts from the navy have been appreciated by many in the Saratoga Springs community, both past and present. The first naval gift show was held in 1978. It was organized by Captain Jack Newman of USS Constitution (CVA-4) who donated his ship’s weight in gold coins as a fundraiser for SARM (Saratoga Springs Naval Militia). In 1984, SARM produced its own show which was held at the Army Ammunition Plant on Third Street. This event was also hosted by Captain Newman and featured items from USS Constitution (CVA-4), USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Independence (LCS-1), and more! In 1990, SARM produced its own show again at the Army Ammunition Plant on Third Street with additional donations from local businesses. The event featured items from USS Constitution (CVA-4), USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Independence(LCS-1),USS Shenandoah(AGL-5),USS Enterprise(CVN64). In 2002, SARM production moved to larger facilities at 4500 South State Parkway due to increased demand. At this point in time, it became possible for everyone in Saratoga Springs to attend their shows! Each year since then has seen new donation levels bring toys, clothes, boats, missiles etc., into our storeroom! We are so grateful to all that have supported us over the years! The USS Saratoga was a wooden ship that served as a tender for the main Navy ship until 1861. From 1861 to 1865, the USS Saratoga fought in the Civil War and was scrapped after the war. In 1946, it was donated to the city of Saratoga Springs and is now used as a museum.
Saratoga Springs, Utah is a small city located in Carbon County, Utah. The population of Saratoga Springs was 9,521 as of the 2010 census. Saratoga Springs is home to the Saratoga SPRings Convention and Visitors Bureau and four springs that offer water skiing and snowboarding: Spring Creek, Blue Jay Creek, North Fork Spring Creek, and East Fork Spring Creek. The name "Saratoga" comes from an English settler named John Saratoga who traveled through the area in 1811. The first post office in Sarataga Springs was established on July 1, 1868. The present day city was founded by Abram J. Farnsworth in 1888 when he purchased land from David Rice for $10 per acre. Farnsworth named the city after his father-in-law General Nathaniel Greene who had helped lead American forces during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1949, Mayor Raymond Worthy designated Spring Creek as the official spring source for residents of the city limits. Saratoga Springs has been home to various cultural events throughout its history including international art exhibitions such as "Exhibition of Paintings by American Artists," held at nearby Westminster Abbey in 1951; and Jazz Festivals which have taken place since 1957 include "The Great Jazz Festival" in 1967; "Rocky Mountain Folklife Festival" in 1978; and "New England Folklife Festival" in 1990. After World War II, the U.S.'s naval capabilities have withered somewhat; however, America remains a powerful military power through its armed forces and intelligence agencies.
