In 1847, the Utah Territory was organized and named for Captain James K. Polk of the United States Navy. For many years, Sandy was known as the most southerly settlement in Territorial America. In 1855, when Brigham Young became president of the Mormons and ordered all female church members to convert to Mormonism or be killed, Sandy's inhabitants responded with a boycott of their local goods. The town slowly recovered but continued to lose population until it had no residents at all by 1910. By then, Sandy had become an abandoned ghost town. In 1990, a team from the National Park Service began excavation of what is now known as Sandy Point on Cache Creek in central Sandy. Dating back to about 1800 BC, this area was home to Native American tribes who constructed small villages hereabouts before moving on after Paleo-Indian collisions with people from across Great Lakes region left them stranded and vulnerable in this remote corner of North America. Sandy Point is significant because it is one of only two sites in Utah that have been excavated extensively from ancient cliff dwellings dating back over 7500 years! These dwellings are among the oldest pre-Columbian structures ever discovered in any western hemisphere landmass! They are also some of the most complex and well preserved such examples extant anywhere within our continent! It has long been speculated that these cliff dwellings were used as religious institutions by early Mormon settlers during their migrations across North America – providing evidence for a very early form of temple worship! To date there has never been any conclusive proof that these buildings were used for anything other than residential purposes though; they remain one of nature's most enigmatic wonders! Today much remains unknown about these complexes however; researchers are currently working on developing several theories based upon examinations made at Sandy Point throughout its history including: 1) That these dwellings may have served as winter encampments for Paiute and Shoshone Indians living around Cache Valley prior to their relocation eastward along I-15 sometime between AD 1000 and 1300; 2) That they may have functioned as ritual centers where priests conducted baptisms and sacrifices during ceremonies related to important natural disasters such as floods or firestorms (e.g., creation stories); 3) That they may have been occupied intermittently throughout history by different groups seeking refuge or protection from hostile neighbors (e.g., Fremont Indian tribe during times of conflict with Spanish colonists); 4) That they may even have served as summer residences for high-ranking Mormon officials during their annual lecture tours through Cache Valley; 5) etc.) However, without definitive proof any theory can be considered definitive - which is precisely why further excavation at Sandy Point remains so important!
