The town has experienced a number of changes over the years, including becoming part of the United States in 1907, experiencing a devastating fire in 1933, and becoming an agricultural center during World War II. Today, Sandy is home to a population of approximately 10,000 people who are largely engaged in agriculture or other rural pursuits. The history of Sandy began with the arrival of Mormon pioneers in 1847. At that time the area was sparsely populated and lacked any significant resources. In order to provide food for their families and build up their settlement, the pioneers worked together to find land and purchase it from local Native Americans. Sandy was founded in 1847 by David W. Richards, who named it for his wife, Sandy, and son Solomon. Richards saw the potential of the area as a place to grow wheat and cattle, and he built a mill on the outlet of the Jordan River. The town grew quickly, with people coming from all over to find work in the new land. By 1870, Sandy had a population of around 250 people. In 1880, there was an influx of Mexicans who wanted to find work in what was then an agricultural society. This created tension among local residents about how best to handle this new population. In 1887, a school was opened in Sandy and soon become one of the most important institutions in the community. In 1933, when Salt Lake City was founded as a city limits town by president Franklin D. Roosevelt, Sandy became part of city limits due to its proximity to Salt Lake City's central business district. However, because it is located within state borders rather than inside city limits like other towns within city boundaries, Sandy has not seen much development since 1933. Today, it remains primarily a farming community with some small businesses based out of its courthouse square location
