Coffee beans were brought overland from South America and Africa, and roasted onsite by local men and women. Today, fresh roasted coffee is an important part of the community flavor mix, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The first place to sell coffee in Sandy was the Old Dutch Cafe. In 1853, the founder of OldDutchCoffee co-founded with his brother Amos Dutchman the company that would become Deseret Coffee Company Limited. The first store opened at 6th and Temple Streets in Sandy. deseretcoffeeplease@gmail.com Sandy's early years were tumultuous: during the 1860s it was one of several communities hit hard by polygamy Beginnings of Mormonism spread religious fervor throughout central Utah which led to social upheaval: polygamy violated LDS Church doctrine In 1865 Englishman Alfred Fairchild purchased land north of Sandy along State Road 10; this became known as Fairchild Ranch He began roasting coffee beans and selling them from his home until 1870 when he moved his business to what is now called Main Street near Rice University In 1872 he partnered with John Atchison who ran Atchison Coffee & Grain Co., east of Sandy on SR 10 (now Beavercreek Boulevard) where they operated a small grocery/market before moving into larger stores across central Utah In 1886 they merged with Deseret Coffee Co., also founded in 1883 They continued operations as two separate companies until 1912 when they merged into Deseret Corporation . From 1912 until 1978 their factories were located at 400 W Vineyard Rd NE in Draper “Deseret Corporation” changed its name to “Sandy Corp” after1978 when all their factories were consolidated under one roof at 401 W Vineyard Rd NE in Draper . Thereafter continuing production under that name until 1990 when ownership passed away to Keene Brewery Incorporated
