Sandy, Utah is a town in south-central Utah that was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saints. The population of Sandy was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is located in Salt Lake County. The history of Sandy began with the arrival of Mormons from Illinois in 1847. Brigham Young and his men explored the area around Sandy and found many fertile acres to farm. In 1849, Brigham Young decided to establish a new settlement near what is now Provo, Utah. He named the settlement after Saint George, one of his apostles and witnesses to Jesus Christ's resurrected body. The site chosen for Sandy was on high ground that overlooked the city of Provo and its agricultural fields below. In 1850, pioneers arrived at Sandy from Independence Missouri with plans to start a new life in this remote place. They were greeted by strong earthquakes that had recently struck the area; these tremors may have been related to Mormon missionaries' efforts to spread Christianity throughout this area during those difficult days before railroads arrived and made travel much easier. With no roads or trails available until later in the century, early settlers relied heavily on horseback transportation for their goods and services; they also built churches and schools hereabouts as well as businesses such as stores, grain silos, woolen mills (a few still extant), livery stable/racing stable/church, blacksmith shop/laboratory etcetera). However accessibility has since improved greatly thanks largely to both government investment (Highway 15) through Salt Lake County and private enterprise (Utah Motorsports Park).
