The Utah National Guard has a rich history in Salt Lake City. The unit was first organized on December 15, 1907, when the Territorial legislature created the National Guard of Utah. At that time, there were only 8 Active Guardsmen and 2 Reserve Guardsmen in the state. In 1912, the National Guard received its present name of the Utah National Guard. In 1938, it was determined that all guard units must have an insignia and shield design to differentiate them from other state militias. The first shields used for the National Guard were a blue and white shield with Goldttynium rays superimposed on it; this was changed to a red and green shield in 1944. During World War II (1939-1945), the NBGU saw service in both world wars as part of both military forcesrant Iraq and Canada. Afterward, they continued to serve through various peace time periods until their current status as a reserve force was established in 1972. Today, there are over 9500 members of the NBGU stationed in Utah statewide including 350 officers who maintain order while guarding our Nation's Capital buildings as well as many garrison locations throughout our State Including Provo, Ogden, Sandy City & North Valley cities!

The Utah National Guard has a long and varied history in Salt Lake City. The first national guard unit to be stationed in the city was the 1st Battalion, 7th Regiment, Territorial Marines on October 16, 1882. In 1906, the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment was activated and served until 1912 when it was redesignated as the 1st battalion, 9th Regiment Nevada National Guards. The regiment served in World War I and II before being reactivated in 1956 as the 3rd battalion, 9th Regiment Utah National Guard. The unit served until 1978 when it became part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Army's 6th Infantry Division headquartered at Fort Hood Texas. In 1992-1994 two battalions from the 1st Brigade (2nd Infantry) were sent to Somalia to help with United Nations peacekeeping efforts under U.S. leadership during Operation Restore Hope. These battalions returned home in 1995 but continued support for UNIFIL through 1996-1998 under then Lieutenant General George Casey who later became Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton On May 12 2009 three companies from Company K1/5 Utah State Army National Guard took oaths of office as members of elements of 3rd Brigade Combat Team 4th Infantry Division (I Corps), 101st Airborne Division while they relieved elements of 4th brigade Combat Team 8TH Armor at Camp David Maryland after that brigade's withdrawal from Iraq due to budgetary restrictions

The population was estimated to be over 600,000 when it incorporated as a city in 1896. Today it has a population of over 1 million people and is the most populous city in both Utah and America. The metropolitan area has a population of 3 million people. Salt Lake City's economy is based principally upon tourism and government services including education and law enforcement. The downtown core is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America with its architecture, exhibits, bars and restaurants. Many famous American politicians have lived or worked in Salt Lake City such as Ulysses S Grant, Richard Nixon and Harry Truman among others.
The National Guard is one of the oldest and most important segments of the United States military. The Guard has a rich history dating back to 1775, when Continental Marines under command of General George Washington began their fight against British forces in Boston. In 1815, Congress created the 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment as a Militia unit to serve as a deterrent against revolutionary activity in New York State. In 1861, after Confederate States of America was formed, the National Guard was initially activated to support Federal troops in southern Virginia and Maryland but soon became active on behalf of the Confederacy. By 1865, almost all Union states had joined the Union, making it necessary for the National Guards to disband or be disbanded into other units. However, many national guard units remained active until 1903 when they were reorganized into permanent infantry divisions and brigades under Army Commanding General Douglas MacArthur’s Abilene Divisional Plan (ABP). In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 which called for all state militias within two years to be placed under federal control as part of an overall plan designed to strengthen American defenses against potential aggression from abroad by creating an army that could be mobilized quickly and effectively in any event. This order marked a significant change in policy which had been developed over many years by both Presidents Wilson and Coolidge; Wilson having favored arming state militias while Coolidge preferred that these formations remain peaceful paramilitary organizations without weapons or combat experience outside of home defense duty during times of peace time (e.g., prohibition crisis). As result of this policy shift there were now more than 2 million military-aged men registered with state militias across the U.S.; this number increasing rapidly as war tensions mounted during World War II (see also: “National Guard History 1914-1967: A Timeline”). During World War II there were numerous changes within the National Guard including: The first major change came withactivation ofthe 7th Airborne Division on September 20th 1942 which was composed mostly Reserve officers who had responded voluntarily for training at Fort Benning Georgia; this division would become attached directly to Ninth Army Commander Lieutenant General George Smedley Butler who would lead Allied efforts throughout North Africa and Italy prior to Operation Overlord (i.e., Battle Of Normandy) where they would play a critical role leading airborne assault assaults along with Navy Seals ashore onJune 6th 1944.) On Nov. 15, 1861, the first national guard units were activated in New York City. On Dec. 3, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for an additional 1,500 guardsmen to be deployed throughout the Union. The first regiment of the National Guard was organized on Feb. 14, 1862 and initially consisted of men from New York City and other Northeastern cities.
