In 1946, the United States Air Force was formed as a result of the National Defense Act of 1941. At that time, the USAF consisted of 12 fighter and bomber wings located in 9 states. The organization was initially called Strategic Air Command (SAC). On July 1, 1950, SAC was redesignated as Tactical Air Command (TACC). The air force Gift History in Salt Lake City begins with Lt. General James Doolittle's Operation Neptune's Spear which resulted in Japan's surrender. This event is often considered to be the beginning of the end for World War II and it is also considered to be one of America's most successful strategic campaigns. General Doolittle also helped create America's first aerospace program which led to the development of both jet aircraft and space exploration initiatives during the Cold War era. The Utah Air National Guard's 5th Airlift Squadron, also known as "The Hennepin" squadron, was the first squadron in the Salt Lake City Regional Airport. The unit was activated on November 17, 1942 and assigned to the newly formed 7th Command Wing which hiked from Ogden to Salt Lake City. The squadron flew transports for training and air defense missions until being reassigned to RAF Bovingdon in England in 1945. In 1947-48 the squadron flew NATO bomber operations against Germany during World War II. In 1957-58 the unit became an all C-119 Globemaster III Flying Training Squadron and began flying T-8 Talon trainers out of Salt Lake Cityridge Airport. In 1965-66 they transitioned to F-100 Super Sabres and served with USAF Tactical Air Command (TAC) until its disbanding on August 1, 1971. The squadron's last assignment was as a tactical Airlift Wing at Andersen AFB, Gallup NM before it left for good on September 3rd 1972. On November 17th 1942 5th Airlift Squadron activation occurred at Salt Lake City Regional Airport when RAF Bovingdon transferred their transport aircraft from RAF Hanworth to USAAF service under Operation Neptune's Spear . With only 9 days notice these Douglas DC3s were quickly registered as "5AS" with USAAF serial number 42–24414 & Code LUVY within minutes of arrivals at SLC airport...This marks the beginning of a long association between this airport & our friendly RCAF Bomber Squadrons!

In 1850 Brigham Young revealed he had received a revelation ordering him to move heaven and earth to found a new Zion (an ideal place) and so saltLakeCity became known as Zion National Park after his revelation was published in The Times Herald newspaper on January 3 that year The original territorial boundaries extended along Cache Creek southward to Sandyhook Creek before being reduced at Conference Bluffs by Mormon settlers led by John Dyer Southerland around 1870 following concerns about potential land grants from Uintah County commissioners seeking access to Stillwater Reservoir near Provo Mormon pioneers also acquired some acreage northward along Center Street from Blacksmith shop owner Alfred Wideman toward Logan Airport In 1896 LDS apostle Joseph Fielding Smith announced plans for a new church building called Kimball House which would be completed within eighteen months at a cost of $20 million dollars with 10% shares held by members rather than given away like tithes had been throughout history Mormons continued construction until April 1898 when they abandoned shipyards at Promontory Point due to lack of available water power for generators necessary for temple construction
The United States Airforce is one of the most powerful air forces in the world. The USAF has a wide variety of aircraft, including fighters, bombers, and helicopters. It is also one of the largest air forces in the world with over 350,000 personnel. The USAF also has a large arsenal of weapons, including nuclear arms and missiles. The USAF was founded on June 15th 1947 by President Harry Truman as a branch of the military service known as the Ulysses S. Grant National Defense Service Force. On July 1st 1951, the USAF was re-organized into two separate services:the Tactical Air Command (TAC) andthe Strategic Air Command (SAC). In 1957, both TAC and SAC were combined to form Central Air Command (CACC). In 1968 CACC was disbanded and its assets divided between Twentieth Air Force (20 AF), Ninth Air Force (9 AF), First Marine Division(1 MEF), Second Marine Division(2 MEF), Eighth Army(8 AF), Third World Liberation Force(3 WLF), Seventy-eighth Fighter Wing(78 FW) and First Special Forces Squadron(1 SFW). In 1992 CINCPAC merged with CENTCOM to create Unified Commands for all American Military Forces--Air Combat Command (AFC)--which continues to this day as CENTCOM's primary organization subordinate to AFRICOM.
