Roy, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Mountains of southern Utah. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Roy was founded in 1879 by Mormons who were coming from Cache Valley to homestead land in the area. The first post office was established here in 1881. The Roy Mint began operations here in 1907 and continued until 1914. It was one of only two mints operated by the United States Mint during its existence. In 1911, Roy became a city and has since grown rapidly as an agricultural center with a large dairy and hog production operation. The Roy Manufacturing Company manufactured tractors, trucks, saddles, harnesses, flour mills and other products here until it merged with George Gillett's McGee Manufacturing Company in 1959 to form McGee-Gillett Corporation. Today Roy is home to many businesses including several restaurants and bars as well as a variety of stores including a library, medical clinic and art gallery. A pier provides access to the Great Salt Lake which features some impressive lakeside scenery along its length. Roy also offers excellent hiking opportunities both from town limits (just off US-491) that include scenic views of Cedar Mesa National Park as well as more strenuous routes reaching up into cliffs on nearby mountainsides such as Mount Nebo or Capitol Reef National Park
