Riverton is a small town in the Salt Lake Valley located about 25 miles north of downtown Salt Lake City. The population was 7,284 at the 2010 census. It lies within Utah County and is part of the larger Provo-Orem metropolitan area. The townsite was platted in 1854 by pioneers led by George W. Hill and named for Riverton Creek running through it. The first post office opened in 1875 and remained in operation until 1963. In 1907, the railroad arrived to provide transportation to surrounding farms and communities; this helped develop Riverton as a commercial center with its own schools, churches, businesses, and tourist attractions. In the early 1800s, Riverton was a small town in southern Utah. It was located on the Tooele River, about 20 miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. The town had a population of about 100 people and was built on a salt lick that still exists today. Riverton first appeared on maps in 1847 when George Waddell mapped the area. At that time, it was part of Butte County and consisted of just a few homes and some scattered agricultural land. In 1850, however,riverton became an incorporated town under the name of Tooele. By 1861, its population had grown to 350 people and it included a post office, store, schoolhouse and two barns. During the late 1800s and into the 1900s, Riverton experienced several significant changes. First, it began to become known as one of the most important agricultural centers in southern Utah because it produced high-quality hay and other crops for local farmers. Second, it became an important transportation stop for travelers heading northward along I-15 or southward along I-80 through central Utah during this time period. Finally, it also became home to many businesses including a cotton gin (1892), bakery (1902), flour mill (1909), newspaper publishing house (1913) and shoe shop (1920). Although riverton experienced many cultural changes over its years as an incorporated community, its residents always maintained their strong sense of community spirit which helped contribute to its well-being during these times. In fact, many residents continued to reside in their homes until after they passed away – something that is often seen as unique in today’s society.
In the early 1800s, Riverton was a small settlement along the Cache River. It was first named for General James Winchester, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Utah. The town grew rapidly after railroads arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and by 1900 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1916, Riverton became the county seat of Kane County after its creation from part of Salt Lake County.
