The original settlers were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The name "Riverton" was chosen because it means "the running water." The first store in Riverton opened its doors in 1875. A post office was established in 1876 and renamed Riverton in 1886 after James G. Talmage, who became mayor of Park City and alderman for Riverton Township when it was created withinriver ton's boundaries.
