Riverton is a town in Garfield County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,722 at the 2010 census. Riverton is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The town of Riverton was founded in 1868 by Brigham Young and his family after they left Nauvoo, Illinois. The first post office in the town was established in 1870. A store and school were started in 1874; both were destroyed by a fire years later. The first grocery store opened in 1876 and the first bank in Riverton was chartered on December 15, 1880. In 1907, the name of the town changed to honor John Davenport Rivers, who had been mayor of Ogden during that year's Mormon general conference. The rivers running through Riverton are named for him: John Davenport Rivers Drive, John Davenport Rivers Road/Street, and John Davenport Rivers Boulevard/Boulevard
