The Riverton Army Depot was first established in 1892 as the Utah Arsenal and soon became one of the largest arms dealers in Utah. The depot also played a significant role in the history of the Utah National Guard, which was formed on July 1, 1907. The guard's first unit was organized at the depot and its first commander was Major General George Armstrong Custer. In 1916, the armament depot became part of the United States War Department and it remained that way until 1951 when it reverted to its original name, the Riverton Army Depot.
