The history of Provo dates back to 1847 when Brigham Young founded the Mormon Battalion on this site. In 1863, Brigham Young named it for his brother Isaac Penrose who had helped lead an LDS escort from Nauvoo, Illinois to St. George,Utah during the Nauvoo Exposition. In 1868, Provo was made a territorial capital and remained so until 1907 when it became an independent city under Mayor John Waddell. On July 15th 1908 Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Provo Canyon with wagonloads of goods and set up camp on land that would later become State Street. Today's downtown area began as part of what would eventually become Pioneer Square Mall which anchors Main Street NE corner Springdale Blvd., just south of North Temple Drive across from Interstate 80/I-15 exit 43A (Providence Avenue). In 1905 Mayor Waddell dedicated Nibley Park as a public parkland area between State Street and Springdale Boulevard east of Interstate 80/I-15 exit 43A (Providence Avenue). This parkland also included present day Second Ward Center which housed blocks A-E on SW corner First National Bank building lot from 1901 to 1978 including Block F between Broadway and Third Streets before being moved to its current location next door to Providence Avenue Junior High School starting in 1951 In 1923 President Franklin D. Richards called for plans for a new university campus adjacent to Springdale Boulevard east of I-80/I-15 exit 43A (Providence Ave) – which would eventually become BYU University - after seeing how other colleges were expanding into new areas such as Salt Lake City while others were getting rid of buildings or merging with other institutions .On October 16th 1925 president Richards announced that BYU had been chosen as one among thirteen universities selected for nationalization by President Herbert Hoover under Executive Order 9
