There is no doubt that Provo, Utah has a rich coffee history. The city was founded in 1895 by John Atchison, who purchased 1,000 acres of land in the region and built the first grocery store in Provo. By 1907, Atchison had opened two more stores and by 1912 he had started selling coffee beans to other businesses. In 1915, Atchison became the owner of the local coffee company, which would later be renamed Asahi Coffee Co. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Provo experienced a period of growth and progress as it became one of the leading agricultural towns in America. This success led to increased business for Asahi Coffee Company and its subsidiary companies. During this time period, Provo also saw an influx of new people from Japan who were looking for fresh air and opportunity. These people helped develop what would become known as Japanese-American culture in Utah. Asahi Coffee Co.'s years at the helm were not without controversy however; during some periods there were high levels of sickness due to poor health conditions associated with working with beans from Africa (Atchison's original supply). Nevertheless, through hard work and determination these men managed to keep Asahi Coffee Company afloat until its sale in 1936 to Jardine Matheson & Co., Ltd., one of British Petroleum's largest oil companies. During World War II production at Asahi Coffee Co.—and throughout Japan—was suspended while resources were diverted towards war efforts. However, when hostilities ended many employees returned home and resumed their normal lives. Afterward many aspects of Japanese- American life changed; some businesses closed down but others thrived thanks to new entrepreneurs who had come into play during wartime times (such as David Matsuhisa). The post-war boom actually turned negative for several reasons: prices for goods exported from Japan went up、a lack of skilled labor caused technological advances related to food production to lag behind those needed for munitions manufacturing、and adverse environmental effects caused by postwar development led finallyto Dust Bowl–like conditions throughout much of California’s Central Valley (Kirkland 1979). Today there are many small farms that still grow coffee under traditional methods on isolated hillsides throughout central Utah
