Provo is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the Salt Lake Valley and has been since 1847. It is located on the Wasatch Plateau, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Salt Lake City. The first residents of Provo were Mormons who had come from Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1846. The Mormon pioneers founded Provo on November 24, 1847 after traveling through Wyoming and Nebraska on their way to St Louis, Missouri. Theyading east from Nauvoo they arrived at what is now Provo Junction on December 3rd. Brigham Young ordered that no buildings be built until they had a town square with a courthouse and jail where they could meet to decide disputes among themselves. This order was not followed and within weeks there were several small settlements scattered around the area which became known as "the back country." In 1850 Brigham Young called for another group of Mormons to travel westward and establish what would become Ogden City. However this group only made it as far as Centerville before being driven back by Native Americans who claimed the land for their own tribe known as The Dallesians or Deseretites. In 1851 Brigham Young again called for a larger group to journey westward but this time he persuaded the able-bodied men only to go so far as Midvale before being driven back by Indian warriors led by Chief Joseph Smith Jr.. In October 1853 Brigham Young sent an army under General Kit Carson along with 300 Latter-day Saint volunteers across North America into Colorado Territory in search of new land where they might settle. After two months' searching they found nothing suitable and returned home without finding any new territory worthy of colonization so instead they encampment camped near Longs Peak overlooking Weber Valley until finally reaching Winter Quarters near present day Cedar Mesa on February 14th, 1855 whereupon 11 out of 16 participants left with Emmeline B Wells pregnant with her first child six days later while 8 others died from heat stroke during march across snow banks into Colorado Territory Unknown To All but Some Today buried Thereabouts within easy walking distance today
