The city's origins date back to 1847 when Brigham Young founded the Mormon Settlement in what is now Provo. In 1857, Provo became the territorial capital of Deseret Kingdom and it remained that way until 1912 when Salt Lake City became its permanent capital. The Santa Clara Mission formed on February 14, 1850 by José Antonio Vargas and Friar Francisco Asunción located near present day downtown Provo along State Street served as an early missionary outpost for LDS missionaries throughout much of North America before being closed down in 1858 due to persecution from Mexican authorities. In 1863, Brigham Young ordered all Mormon settlers east of fort Bridger be driven out and moved into what is now known as Springdale because he perceived that they were threatening his nascent church with their cultural practices which he considered idolatry. The first major development associated with Provo was the construction of Fort Bridger - one of only two military installations constructed by Mormons outside of Nauvoo, Illinois - in 1865 to defend against Indians raids into western Utah County. Although little use was made of it during its lifetime, Fort Bridger has become locally notable for its distinctive sandstone façade and features a watchtower designed by Daniel Burnham who also supervised construction of other prominent buildings within town including Temple Square and county courthouse. During World War II, various industries such as munitions production were established within town limits but ceased operations after the war ended; this included Pioneer Uranium Company which manufactured uranium weapons at nearby Arvada while American Cyanamid manufactured pesticidal products at nearby Cottonwood Heights until both companies merged into Dow Chemical Company in 1984). Nevertheless, some community businesses continued long after wartime closure including Hite House grill (founded by Garland Hite), JBL Audio Corporation (founded by Jerome Bogan), First National Bank (established 1888), Ashley Furniture (initially established as Singer Sewing & Tailoring company), Richards Greeting Cards (founded 1916) and many others which still operate today within town limits despite moving away from their original locations over time or change in ownership/control. In recent years there have been efforts to revive downtown Provo through redevelopment projects spearheaded by local restaurateur Danny Shaffer particularly around Main Street where several hundred residential units are planned to be built between 2005-2010 with mixeduse developments surrounding it containing office space/retail space etcetera;[1] this project has seen mixed success however given criticism over high levels of traffic congestion vehicular access can be constrained making it difficult to reach most parts of town whilst also stifling pedestrian activity particularly towards evening hours however overall redevelopments like these provide an opportunity for new entrepreneurs/businesspeople to start up local businesses rather than rely on large corporates who often neglect smaller towns/cities
