In the early 1900s, Ethiopian settlers began to arrive in Provo and begin to grow coffee. By the 1930s, there were over 100 small-scale roasters in Provo. In 1961, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) founded its own cooperative grocery store in Provo called "The Church Store." This was the first grocery store operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints anywhere in the world. Over time, other church-owned businesses joined The Church Store including a florist, bakery, convenience store, dry goods store and gas station. Today, there are over 350 independent artisanal coffee roasters operating in Provo alone. Many of these roasters are located within walking distance of each other and many offer unique blends and flavors that are not easily replicated elsewhere. The first buildings were erected in this new downtown district including banks, churches, post office and school buildings; all designed by architect Alfred Atherton under guidance from President John Taylor himself. Downtown business activity mushroomed after World War II thanks to heavy industry such as aluminum production plants; printing presses; meatpacking plants; trucking companies; aircraft manufacturing companies; electronics manufacturers and others who moved into the Nowhere Valley after hostilities ended in 1945. However, since 2000s growth has been more modest with denser concentrations around shopping malls and professional services such as law enforcement agencies being major drivers of economic development since many businesses have relocated outside town limits during this time period
