The United States Navy deploys a variety of gift items and equipment to different parts of the world. This often includes gifts for service members, their families, and friends. In Pleasant Grove, Utah, the Navy has deployed three different types of gifts in recent history. The first was in 1951 when the USS Missouri (BB-63) was donated to the military by Mrs. George Bush. The ship had been lost in action during World War II and was used as a training vessel until she was donated to the navy. Since it was a Naval Ship, it came with many privileges such as being able to send messengers across water obstacles and conducting naval exercises from her decks. In 1957, USS Proctor (DDG-9) came into the navy’s possession after she had been scrapped by the Japanese government during World War II. She had been damaged beyond repair but her crew managed to save her so she could be used as an air carrier for Japan’s army until she was scrapped. The US navy decided that this ship would be perfect for Give Thanks week because she is both an aircraft carrier and a warship which can also act as a goodwill ambassador for America around the world. To commemorate this event, they named her USS Proctor (CG-5). Lastly, in 1997, USS Cook (CAE-32) became part of the navy’s fleet after being donation by Mrs Toni Morrison. She served in Vietnam before coming back into service as an icebreaker along with USS Pueblo (LHD-1). After serving in this function for five years, she finally decommissioned in 2006 and was donated to the navy by its owner Ms Morrison who wanted them kept active on public display instead of mothballed like most other old ships in our fleet. This fourth consecutive deployment marked one of only two times that new ships have come into our fleet since 2001;the other time being when CG-5 joined our fleet from USS Proctor(CVN 67). Each donation brings some unique element or amenity to our sailors located all over the world who are working tirelessly every day making sure that we can provide safety and security for those within our borders!

Pleasant Grove, Utah is a small town in Hyrum County, Utah. The population was 5,362 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Wasatch Front National Park. Pleasant Grove was founded in 1872 by Latter-day Saint pioneers and Indian traders. The first settlement was called "Nauvoo." In 1876, Pleasant Grove became one of the original towns in Hyrum County. A group of Mormon settlers were crossing the Great Salt Lake when they were attacked by a Sioux tribe. The Mormons were killed or captured and then hung from trees in what is now known as the "Pleasant Grove Massacre."
