Pleasant Grove, Utah was named for the Pleasant Hills neighborhood in Philadelphia. The first European to visit this place was Juan Rodríguez de Montoya on July 10, 1692. He named it after the hills near his home in Spain. When Brigham Young and his party arrived in 1847, they found a Paiute village here and decided to name their new settlement after them. The town started out as a small farmstead with just six people living there in 1848. In 1860, Pleasant Grove had seventy-six residents and by 1870 it had grown to over one thousand people. The town built its own school in 1872 and then funded the construction of a larger schoolhouse which became known as the “Grand Ole Opry” building today. In 1902, when Utah legalized polygamy, Pleasant Grove had over two hundred residents living there all together. However, within five years most of these families had moved away because of difficult conditions at home or because they were forced to convert to polygamousism by force or threats from Mormons themselves. By 1910 only fifty-nine people lived in Pleasant Grove proper while another eighty-four lived scattered around surrounding towns and villages. However, by 1940 over one hundred people still lived here including thirty-six children who were raised under LDS missionaries throughout the 1930s and 1940s along with other unrelated citizens who chose Mormon homes rather than leave their communities due to political instability or economic hardship caused by World War II shortages of foodstuffs like oil and gasoline
Pleasant Grove was founded on the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. It was a small farming community at the time, and it wasn't until 1860 that Pleasant Grove had its first school. In 1870, Pleasant Grove became an incorporated town. In 1896, Pleasant Grove became the county seat of Utah County.
