In 1861, they organized a town charter and named it after Brigham Young's father-in-law, John A. Widtsoe. By 1870, the city had a population of 1,100 people and was growing rapidly due to its location near Cache Valley and irrigated farmland. Pleasant Grove is a small town in Cache Valley, Utah, United States. It was founded by Latter-day Saint pioneers in 1847. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. Pleasant Grove is part of the Cedar City–Provo, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pleasant Grove was laid out on December 15, 1847, by George Atherton and his brother James Atherton (brother of Joseph Atherton). Their father had acheived land grants from the State of Utah for them to settle in Cache Valley. The original plat included a common and three homes for 10 families. The first post office called Pleasant Grove "Hancock". In 1852, it changed its name to "Pleasant Grove", after President Brigham Young's nephew Hyrum Smith who had been mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois when that city was destroyed by the forces of General Scranton during the Mormon War (1846-48). In 1863, Pleasant Grove became one of 12 townships withinCacheValley organized as District No. 5 under territorial government structure which merged into state government in 1896. In 1908, Pleasant Grove erected a new courthouse that replaced an earlier building which burned down in 1902. The courthouse has been used as the municipal building ever since and is currently being renovated into a community center with offices and other uses expected to begin occupancy in late 2019 or early 2020. In 1913 it opened as a branch library for Cedar City Tribal Library System which served as an offshoot of LDS Church organization until that system's merger with Deseret Book Company effective November 1st 2006 . Today Cedar City Branch Library operates independently as a public library providing access to books/movies/etc., online resources including video LIBRARY members can access anytime thru their member login - no more waiting in line for hours!
