Payson, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. The Payson Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings area with 10 individual buildings and one contributing structure from the early 1860s to the 1930s. The town was named for General George A. Payson who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as judge on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands court. In 1868 Payson built a house on what is now Main Street that still stands today. He also founded the first post office in Kane County and donated land for it on Summit Avenue near Main Street. The first store in Payson opened its doors on October 19, 1868; it was called "The Pioneer Store." Payson's economy depended heavily upon agriculture until about 1920 when oil began to be developed nearby and manufacturing became more important. The Payson area was first settled in 1847, when Brigham Young and his followers arrived there from Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1870, the city of Payson was established as a separate municipality within Utah. In 1912, Payson was designated as the county seat of Kane County. Payson was founded on December 8, 1869, by George F. Payson and his wife Emma. The original town plat identified the site of present-day Payson as "Grand County." The name change to Payson was due to the fact that the first post office in Grand County was at Payson. On November 6, 1870, the Utah Territorial Legislature approved a bill establishing an agricultural colony in what is now eastern Mesa County. That same year, George F. Payson donated 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land in what is now downtown Payson to establish a new town center and first school. In 1872-3, three more blocks of land were donated by George F. Payson to become Pioneer Square NE & SW which still contains part of his donation from 1870. The town's first store opened on October 1, 1872; it was succeeded by the current Post Office building on Main Street in 1886. In 1898 when automobiles became popular in Utah Territory, residents built their own garage and carriage house on Main Street NW for use by local farmers and ranchers who could not afford a dealership or garage closer to their homes.
