In 1872, Brigham Young ordered all pioneers east of the Jordan River to leave for unknown reasons. Many people decided to stay and build homes near Cache Valley instead of moving westward. For many years, Payson was known as one of the most coal-rich towns in America due to its abundance of coal seams that have been mined extensively ever since. One notable resident from Payson during this time was Congressman George Atherton who represented Utah’s 3rd congressional district from 1902 until his death in 1924.
