Orem, Utah is a city located in the Wasatch Front region of southern Utah. Orem is the county seat of Kane County and the largest city in Kane County by population. The City of Orem was created on April 1, 1907 from portions of Provo and Ogden Counties. It is located on the south side of the Jordan River. The population of Orem was estimated at $170,826 as of 2010.[1] The name "Orem" comes from Hebrew שראן (Saratoga). Saratoga means "land where water flows".[2] On July 17, 1847 Brigham Young received intelligence that an army led by General Stephen F. Austin had been discovered marching towards Salt Lake City from California. Young ordered his army to march to meet them and pursue them if they reached Utah Valley before their destination could be determined. After reaching Winter Quarters on October 9, 1847, General Smith orders Major Cumorah to lead a detachment under Captain John Cattle back eastward to investigate this report while he himself accompanied Lieutenant Colonel George Atherton westward alongosite[3] Mormon pioneer Juanita Brooks to explore what would become Springdale Township in southeastern Kane County today’s Provo Municipality when they first sighted American troops near Cedar Mesa on November 25th about six miles northwest of modern-day Orem proper. Upon arrival at Springdale Township Juana Brooks sent word back upstream for Atherton who met her there that day with news that two detachments numbering five hundred men were marching down Snake Creek valley just outside present-day Cottonwood Heights northeast of Cedar Mesa under command[4][5]: these were immediately reported upriver by Captain Cumorah as US Army Brigadier General James Hyrum's Brigade instead! Thereafter both LtCol Atherton and Col Brooks began annually visiting Springdale Township during winter months leading local Native Americans in hunting buffalo herds brought down overland during their long journey homeward—a practice continued until well into the 21st century! Withdrawing Ute scouts accompanying them acrosscountry early one morning possible prelude to war[6][7]: all doubt vanished then cavalry outpost established at Cottonwood Heights soon afterward!! Orem, Utah is a city in UT that is home to Brigham Young University. The population was estimated at 92,839 at the 2010 census. Orem also has a small airport and a small town core which surrounds the larger university campus. Located on the Wasatch Front, Mormon pioneers first traveled to what is now Orem in 1847 to found Brigham Young Academy. In 1850, they founded Orchard Park west of Orem as an agricultural research center. After LDS Church founder Joseph Smith's death in 1844, his followers transferred their headquarters from Carthage, Illinois to Nauvoo, Illinois before finally settling in what is now Orem in 1847. The original Amos-Ware Bridge across the Jordan River was built here by local farmers as part of a wagon road connecting Nauvoo with Salt Lake City. A new bridge was built in 1903 and replaced an earlier one that had been destroyed by floods. The university was organized on February 17, 1896 with 10 students and faculty members meeting at First Presidency Building on South Temple Street. On May 15 of that year President Wilford Woodruff announced that BYU would become self-reliant through purchase of land from The Deseret News Company for $3 million dollars near Provo Utah Railway Stationation Area (PRA). This event marks the beginning of BYU's independent streak and its move away from its sister institutions such as Utah State University and Weber State University which were all owned by The Deseret News Company until 1896 when it became an autonomous institution under then–President David Easley's direction It has since purchased additional tracts of land including most recently Canyonlands National Park located east of Provo off I-15 just outside the boundaries of BYU campus
On October 16, 1847, Brigham Young led a group of Mormon settlers from the Palmyra and Mexico City areas in what is now Orem, Utah. The pioneers arrived at the present-day town of Orem after traveling for about 110 miles through mostly hard-packed dirt and sagebrush. The first permanent settler in what is now Orem was John D. Lee who arrived on December 8, 1847. He had followed Captain James W. Woolley's party that had journeyed from Nauvoo to the Great Salt Lake Valley three days earlier. The townsite of Orem was laid out by George Aiken on May 12, 1850. At that time there were about 50 people living in what is now Orem Township including 10 farmers and 20 sheep herding settlers.
