Orem, Utah is a city located in southern Utah County on the Uinta Mountains. The population was 31,878 at the 2010 census. Orem has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years. The first white settlers arrived in 1847 and founded a town called Vermillion Springs on the south side of Bear Creek. In 1853, Brigham Young moved his headquarters from Tremont to Vermillion Springs and named it after himself, Orem (pronounced ah-reem). In 1865, as part of what is known as the Great Mormon Migration, Brigham Young's followers left their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois for wagon trains bound for Utah. Many of these pioneers elected to remain in eastern Oregon Territory where they had family and friends while others chose to cross the Great Salt Lake Desert into what became Utah Territory. The nucleus of what would become Orem came together soon after this event when some residents of Tremontville voted to incorporate as a town under the name Orem on December 15th 1865. The first post office opened in 1870 and served until 1907. In 1916, an electric streetlight was installed along Center Street which helped make downtown area more visible during night hours; this also helped stimulate economic development that continues today with several high-end businesses including Barnes & Noble bookstore chain and KFC fast food restaurant located within walking distance of each other across Center Street! During World War II many Japanese American citizens were incarcerated at nearby Fort Douglas concentration camp until 1945 when they were released along with most other detainees pursuant to General Order 8200 issued by United States Army Commander George C Marshall on January 24th 1945 entitled "Changes Made In Detention Facilities At Fort Douglas". This order altered conditions at Fort Douglas such that all persons convicted or having actively participated in any form of violent resistance against United States forces or civilians were no longer subject to incarceration and release but rather received compensation instead totaling $27 million!
