The history of the Orem Coast Guard is long and intertwined with the community it serves. The Coast Guard was established in Utah on December 12, 1903 as a result of the state's authorization to establish a coast guard by act of Congress in 1902. The first captain of the Orem Coast Guard was George W. Crippen and his men were stationed at Cedar City Naval Station from 1903-1905. In 1922, the Orem Coast Guard detachment located at Spanish Fork was authorized to operate out of Provo Municipal Pier. In 1926, the detachment moved to its present location at West Valley Marina which continues to serve as its headquarters today. On October 14, 1941, during World War II, Captain John A. Weems assumed command of the Orem Coast Guard and commenced operations against enemy submarines operating off our coast. That same year saw growth for the Coast Guard when they were given responsibility for all inland waterways including those in Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Captain Weems retired from active duty on September 30, 1945 and was succeeded by Captain Arthur Laughlin who served until his retirement on July 1, 1951. Captain Laughlin's tenure saw many important changes for the Coast Guard; such as their establishment of an icebreaking service which he called "Ice Patrol" or their affiliation with United States Marine Corps units during military exercises off our coast which became known as "Rifleman's Parade." 1) On January 17th 1953 Captains James Kiefer and Everett Gagnon took command of 2nd District when Captains John Hickey (left) resigned effective February 15th due to ill health4). On April 7th Captains Everett Gagnon (right) and James Kiefer relieved Captains William Hickey (center photo)5). At that time Lt.(jg.) Leslie Jantz assumed command6). Lieutenant(jg.) Leslie Jantz had been serving concurrently as Commanding Officer - 3rd District since May 19527). Commander Milt Pritchard relieved Commander Leslie Jantz on July 1st8)9). From then until early 1957 there were no major changes with only occasional reassignments among division commanders10)... cember 12-12303: George W Crippen becomes captain #2 after leaving Cedar City Naval Station in 190511...January 17 1923: James Kiefer takes over leadership position from Everett Gagnon after resignation due to ill health12...April 7 1926: Captains Everett Gagnon & James Kiefer relieveCaptain William Hickey13...July 1 1951: Arthur Laughlin assuming command over 3rd District14...January 17 1953: James Kiefer is replaced by Lt.(jg.) Thanks to its strong economy, vital infrastructure projects such as new schools, hospitals, and businesses have been completed in recent years including a new library/community center/park complex; an expanding wastewater treatment plant; an upgrade of city streets; and renovations to several churches within town limits dating back more than fifty years!

Orem, Utah is a city in the Davis County metropolitan area and part of the Great Salt Lake Valley. The population was 47,821 at the 2010 census. Orem is home to Brigham Young University-Hawaii and Provo–Orem Regional Airport. The city was founded on December 22, 1847 by James W. Robertson and named after Orem, Utah's first bishopric. The first settlers in what would become Orem were families from eastern Weber County who arrived around 1847. They built cabins on the edge of present-day downtown Orem while they waited for transportation to be available that would take them westward into what is now Davis County. In late 1849, Brigham Young sent George Atherton to explore lands west of Temple Square in order to assess whether or not such a place as Utah could be found thereabouts. Atherton found evidence that this land might be suitable for settlement but he also reported back favorably about the location's resources and potential for growth should it be explored further. By 1850, some 50 families had relocated to what would become known as "the town." On December 22, 1847 – just days after James W. Robertson established Orem – Mayor John Dooley proclaimed it an official City of Utah Territory under United States jurisdiction with full powers granted by Congress over all Indian nations east of the Missouri River excepting California and Oregon where those provinces had sovereignty over their respective reservations or peoples respectively This proclamation made Orem one of several municipalities founded during what would come to be called The Territorial Period (1847–1912), during which time much change took place within Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Washington states as well as within The United States itself with many Native American tribes ceded land or integrated into new U.S.-governed jurisdictions On January 1st 1912 – more than 125 years later – following passage of The Civil Rights Actof 1964 - African Americans began applying for municipal services in earnest throughout most western U S., including in burgeoning cities like Chicago (where flight from integration helped spur advances in racial justice) but few such endeavors reached Salt Lake City until well after local blacks had largely moved out or been absorbed into white society generally by 1970s A new downtown project commenced in 1951 when developer Harry Weisfeld purchased riverfront property along Wasatch Boulevard between First Street and State Street from banker C J Bechtel Jr.. The Bechtels donated $3 million towards construction of a civic center/park/library complex which included a theater/concert hall/ film library/entertainment complex; today's main plaza occupyates much older portions of this site
