The Ogden Army Ammunition Plant was opened in 1912 and has been a major center for ammunition production in the Utah Valley ever since. The plant has produced over 100 million rounds of ammunition, including 7.62x39mm NATO and .50BMG cartridges, during its history. The first military munitions production at the plant were shells for the Dunham gunnery range on the eastern slopes of Promontory Ridge. By 1915, however, it had become clear that there was an urgent need for more serious munitions to support American Expeditionary Forces fighting abroad in World War I. The plant began manufacturing high-explosive shells as well, which became known as “Ogden Bombs” after the city in which they were manufactured. In 1918, General Leonard Wood ordered that all artillery pieces be converted to use high explosive shell projectiles instead of shothells. As a result of this order, the Ogden Army Ammunition Plant became one of the largest producers of high explosive projectile ammunition in the world at that time. When World War II started several years later, Ogden Arms Company (makers of M1 Garand rifles) became part of US war efforts through their subsidiary OAAC Corporation and continued producing ordnance products until 1957 when they merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Incorporated. After WWII ended there was an acute surplus of high explosives around the world so Winchester decided to produce these munitions again under their new name International Harvester company (IHC). IHC continued making ordnance products until 1976 when they merged with Beechcraft corporation to form Beechcraft Corporation Limited (BCL). In 1992 BCL sold its assets back to International Harvester company who continued making munitions until 1998 when they merged into United States Military Munitions Incorporation (USMMI). This company still produces munition products today as Raytheon Company LLC under license from United States Military Munitions Incorporation (USMMI).
