On January 1, 1984, North Ogdenton became a city with 6 square miles (15 km²) of land within its borders It has experienced rapid growth over the years thanks to several key initiatives such as:1) establishment of high school District 106 in 1990 which opened up many acres adjacent to downtown for development;2) creation of new government offices including Mayor’s Office and City Council chambers in 1995;3) redevelopment of Pioneer Park – an open space just east off I-94 near Veterans Memorial Coliseum – into a world-class performing arts center complete with a $30 million dollar endowment from Microsoft founder Gates Millennium Foundation;4) establishment of DFW MetroRailLink light rail system serving much of downtown via two stops at North/South Center Street/I-94 and First Avenue South/Dakota Drive;5) designation by Mayor Wright as one America’s “Most Promising Cities For Technology Startups” due to significant increase in business activity spurred by strong online presence for local businesses including several dozen tech startups located within walking distance or less than one mile away from district office buildings
