The North Ogden Air Force Base was established in 1940 and is the home of the Utah Air National Guard. The base grew out of World War II when the United States Military activated it as a Third Air Force Station. The first USAF commander at NORAD, General James Doolittle, flew from NORAD's Altus Field in Oklahoma to RAF Chalgrave in Hampshire England on December 7, 1942 to celebrate America's entry into World War II. In 1949, NORAD moved its headquarters to North Ogden and since that time the base has been an important part of American airpower infrastructure. The current fleet of A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft are stationed at NORAD and have played a major role in many conflicts including Desert Storm and Afghanistan. In 1954, NORAD began providing command and control services for all U.S military forces located outside Continental United States under Unified Command (USNORTHCOM). As part of this change, NORAD also became responsible for air defense over all 50 U.S states plus Washington D.C.. On July 1, 1961, responsibility for air defense over Alaska was transferred from USNORTHCOM to Alaska Defense Command effective October 1st due to concerns about Soviet provocations along the Alaskan coastline. That same year, USAF Major General Paul Tibbets became the first Commander-in-Chief USAF Tactical Aerospace Forces when he took command from First Lieutenant General Charles E Kapp Jr.. When Harry S Truman was elected president in 1948 he ordered his secretary of state Dean Rusk to recommend a plan for national security which would create an aerial armada consisting of up to 168 strategic bombers with nuclear weapons capability that could be used offensively against targets within reach; Rusk recommended creating a Strategic Air Command instead which would eventually become AFNORTHPAC (Air Forces New England). In 1951 Joint Chiefs Directive No 008 "Preliminary Notes on Termination or Dissolutionof Army Ground Forces" mandated that all Army ground forces be disbanded by September 30th unless they were transferred or absorbed into other DOD Commands; howeverArmy units still linger on through reserve status until such time as their active duty status is terminated by order or legislation thereof; this directive remains unfulfilled today as no action has been taken toward phasing these units eliminations off completely

On November 7, 1941, North Ogden Air Force Base was activated as the first USAF base in Utah. The Base was home to 1st Fighter Squadron and initially consisted of a single hangar. In 1942, the 1st Fighter Squadron was redesignated as the 388th Fighter Group and began operations at North Ogden AFB. In 1943, the Group became operational with F-4E Phantom II aircraft and also began flying training flights for pilots of P-51 Mustang fighter planes. The 388th Fighter Group then moved to RAF Lincoln in England in 1944 where it flew Jaguar aircraft equipped with spoilers on each wingtip which caused them to fly like jets. The group returned to America in 1945 and disbanded at North Ogden AFB on September 14, 1945.
