Murray, Utah is a census-designated place in Juab County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,568 at the 2010 census. It is named after General James Murray who fought in the Mexican-American War and was a U.S. Army general during World War II. The area now known as Murray was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. In 1858, it became part ofJuab County and remained that way until 1912 when it was organized into its present form as part of the new county seat of Juab County. Murray began to grow rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location on the Wasatch Front near two large mining operations - the Pahrump Mine and Promontory Mine - which generated significant wealth for local residents and businesses. The mines closed in 1927 and 1929 respectively but left a lasting legacy on the community – both physically and emotionally. Today, Murray retains many of its original characteristics including pioneer-era architecture including several churches and other buildings from those years; a bowling alley; a movie theater; an opera house; private homes; and an annual agricultural fair which has become one of the largest events in town.
