The history of Murray begins with its establishment as a small village on the banks of the Virgin River by pioneers who came from Illinois andKansas in 1847. On July 12th, 1907, Murray became an incorporated city under the name of "Murrayborough". In 1932, it seceded fromIron County to become an independent town governed by its own council and elected officials. In 1978, after years of decline due to lack of economic development and population loss due to migration away from the area, Murray's population had fallen to 1,690 residents when it lost its independence to Layton City on January 1st of that year. However, over time the community has slowly begun to recover as new businesses have opened up and more people have moved into the community for reasons such as job opportunities or retirement than for tourism purposes alone. Today there are over 100 businesses operating within the boundaries of Murraytown which makes it one of the most vibrant communities in Iron County
