The Utah Army National Guard was formed on August 29, 1906, by the merger of the two militia regiments in the state. The original armament of these unit were shotguns and handguns, but soon rifles and machine guns began to be purchased. In 1938, a new regiment was created called the 1st Infantry Regiment. This regiment had been raised from scratch as an all-volunteer force and also bore the name of Murray’s first mayor, George W. Smith. In 1947, another regiment was born when the 2nd Infantry Regiment merged with Company K from the 1st Infantry Regiment. This new regiment became known as The Murray Rifles and wore its emblem of a rifle over a shield which represented Utah’s location at right angles to Nevada’s borders. Throughout its history, The Utah Army National Guard has seen many changes including a move to an airmobile division in 1964; conversion into an infantry division in 1987; establishment of brigade sized units in 2003; and currently (2015) establishment of battalion size units as part of Armor Brigade Combat Team 4th Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Today’s military equipment is vast compared to when it was first purchased by the Utah Army National Guard and includes tanks, armored vehicles, artillery pieces, helicopters and more! Many items that were once only available to members of the military have now become standard issue for all soldiers throughout America.
