In the late 1800s, the Utah Air Force was one of the most powerful in the United States. It was formed after a state election in 1902 to provide air defense for the agricultural area that surrounds Salt Lake City. The first squadron was organized on April 12, 1903. The Utah Air Force served as a branch of the military until 1951, when it became an independent agency. From 1951-1958, it was known as The Air Defense Command. In 1958, it changed its name to The Utah Army National Guard and continued to serve as an arm of the national guard until 1990. From 1990-1996, The Utah Army National Guard served as part of Operation Desert Storm during Gulf War II. Since 1996, it has been stationed at Hill AFB in Murray, UT providing support for joint military operations worldwide including Operation Joint Endeavor and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2018-2019, it deployed components to Saudi Arabia in support ofOperation Brigadier General Salman’s campaign against Houthi rebels

Murray was a small town in southeastern Utah, population 4,000 at the time of its incorporation as a city on October 1, 1912. It grew rapidly due to the opening of the Lyman mine and other mining activity in the area. The first post office was established in Murray on November 12, 1912. By 1928, Murray had a population of 10,500 people and it became an incorporated city with a Mayor and City Council. In 1930, Murray merged with Cedar City to form Cedar City-Murray. In 1941, Cedar City-Murray became an independent city again when it seceded from Murray. The last mayor of Cedar City-Murray was Harry Laughlin who served until his death in 1984. The economic base of Murray has been agriculture for most of its history; however, this is changing as more businesses open up in the area that can provide jobs for locals and visitors alike. There are also several factories and companies located in or near Murray that have played importance in the local economy over the years. Some examples include: Allstate Insurance Company (now State Farm), United States Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal), WACO Paper Mill (now known as MWI Paper Mills Inc.), KSLA Radio Corporation (now Premiere Radio Networks) and Brigham Young University–Hawaii football team's home stadium—Hawaii Stadium—which began play there in 1924 after previously being played at Municipal Stadium (then called Aloha Park). The July 1997 massacre which took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School left 8 children dead and 27 others injured; this event had a lasting impact on both Cedar City-Murray and Murray itself because it made people more aware of gun safety precautions needed when visiting these areas. Additionally, since then many events have taken place within or around Murray that have brought attention to local issues or added to community diversity including: Taste OF Utah® food truck festival held annually at Red Rock Canyon Park; September 17th celebration marking International Yoga Day hosted by Presidency Christian Church containing yoga classes from 5pm to 11pm; Parade & Festival organized by ValleyFair Entertainment District featuring music performances by various bands throughout the day starting at 9am; October 4th celebration honoring Veteran’s Day hosted by First United Methodist Church featuring military displays from 2pm to 5pm There are also now attempts being made to revive downtown Moranville which has lost much of its popularity with tourists due to new development taking place nearby such as ECHO+ hotel/motel project currently under construction next door along with some other developments totaling nearly $8 million dollars earmarked for Moranville according to recent news reports.; However despite all these efforts downtown Moranville remains largely unchanged since it was abandoned during World War II while other parts of town experienced significant growth thanks mostly to involvement from businesses related thereto such as Energy Equipment Contractors Inc., National Broadcasting System Inc., Duncan Construction Co., etc
