Midvale, Utah is a town in Utah County, located in the Midvale metropolitan area. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. Midvale is home to Brigham Young University-Hawaii and Provo City College. It is also the site of the Salt Lake City International Airport. The first post office in Midvale was established on December 12, 1847, by Order of British Columbia King George III as part of a mail route between Great Britain and points east overland. The name "Midvale" was suggested by Captain John Crouch who surveyed and donated land for the townsite. In 1851, Mormon missionaries Joseph Fenton and Sidney Rigdon arrived in Midvale from Nauvoo, Illinois with instructions to proselytize among Native Americans living west of the Jordan River. They assigned local settler Charles Hales to lead an effort to find a location for a church in Midvale that could serve both Native American residents and European settlers alike. On July 15, 1851, Hales designated what is now known as First Ward (northwest corner of Main Street and Center Avenue) as the site for what would become Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU-H). In 1870–71, Territorial Governor David Wilford named Midvale's remaining two wards - Second Ward (southwest corner of Main Street) and Third Ward (east corner of Center Avenue) - respectively after his hometowns: Newcastle upon Tyne in north England and Hartfordville near Buffalo Valley in New York State. By 1888 nearly allnative residents had been removed from their homes within sight or influence of BYU-H so that construction could begin on what would become Provo City College (PCC). As enrollment grew at BYU-H until World War II it became necessary to establish separate buildings for women students; this occurred during 1918–19 when Provo Women’s College opened on campus across Seventh Avenue from PCC’s original building on South Temple Place East. The LDS Church announced its decision to move its headquarters from Ogden to downtown Salt Lake City on November 6, 1962 following years of planning which began with consideration given to locating within walking distance of Temple Square rather than distant Ogden where space was limited. At that time there were only 2 blocks wide streetspace available between Temple Square and Cottonwood Heights while much larger blocks lay vacant between temple square and other key downtown areas such as Pioneer Square or 300 North 600 West which served primarily as movie theaters at that time([1]). Midvale, Utah is one of the most geographically diverse and religiously diverse communities in the United States. Midvale has a population of over 100,000 people and is home to many churches and mosques. The community also has a rich history that can be found on its local paper, The Daily Review. Midvale was founded in 1902 by pioneers who came from eastern Utah's Cache Valley. The original town was located near today's Midvale City and was named after Meetinghouse Hill, which stood at the junction of two valleys - Cache Valley to the south and Springdale County to the north. In 1916, Midvale became an independent city when it joined Salt Lake City as a municipal district. In 1980, Midvale passed a resolution urging its residents to adopt a new form of government known as "civic village." This system allowed residents more say in how their community operated and resulted in more efficient government operations. Civic villages have been adopted by other communities throughout Utah including Logan and Provo-Orem. The Daily Review's history began publication on October 1, 1896 as the "Valley Times". The paper was first printed at two locations - one inCache Valley (then called Greenville) and one in Springdale. By 1907, circulation had increased to 11 times its initial size! In 1915, The Daily Review moved from Greenville to what is now Midvale City Center where it remains today publisherially active with an audience of over 100,000 people each week! In 1980, when Salt Lake City annexed much of neighboring Springdale County into itself, midvale voted not to annex into salt lake city but did so with regards to civic village system rather than having its own separate government! "The Daily Review", long considered one of America's leading newspapers for rural readership due largely to its populist editorial policies," closed down shop on September 30th 1984 due mainly to financial difficulties brought about by changing economic conditions within the LDS Church." However despite these challenges the paper continued publication until 2009 before being reborn as "Dailyreviewonline."
