The Navy has always been a longtime presence in Midvale, Utah. The town was founded by Mormon settlers in the early 1800s, and the military played an important role during World War II. Today, the navy is associated with Midvale's downtown area and its naval museum. The first time the navy came to Midvale was in 1861 when Commodore John D. Sloat brought his USS Constitution here for repairs. The ship stayed for several months before returning home. In 1875, sailors from HMS Agamemnon loaded supplies onto a schooner called Swan at anchor off ofshore and headed out to sea on their way to Salt Lake City. Midvale's first Naval Museum opened in 1949 as part of the city's celebration of its 50th anniversary as a municipality. That same year, Utah became a state and the navy began its own strategic planning program; consequently, the museum reflected that change. Prior to that it had been managed by naval officers who were appellate judges on various district courtships throughout central Utah (the only court-martial operation conducted by the navy). The museum currently contains exhibited items dating back to 1869 when Captain George Ramsay surveyed Middle Valley looking for land for what would become Midvale Beach State Park today! In 1970-1971 Rear Admiral David Ladd took command of Destroyer Squadron Fourteen (DESRON 14) based at Great Lakes Naval Shipyard in Edgewater, Illinois while DESRON 13 patrolled offshore off California coast searching for illegal drug traffickers responsible for terrorist bombings along Uinta Mountains border regions some years earlier!!! It should be noted that DESRON 14 operated from both Great Lakes Naval Shipyard & also from Alameda County Pier #3 located just east of Downtown Salt Lake City which served as our primary support dockage facility during this time period From 1984 until 2003 MIDVALE NATIONWIDE SERVICE DAY was celebrated annually on July 4th with parades/festivals all around town including a HUGE fireworks show over water at Harbor Landing Marina Dock
