Midvale is a town in Utah County, located about 25 miles south of Salt Lake City. Midvale's population was 9,468 at the 2000 census. The website for Midvale has data from the 2006 census which shows that the population had grown to 10,823. The first Europeans to visit what is now Midvale were Mormon missionaries in 1847. The town was platted in 1853 and named for Major Amos Miles Midwinter, who donated land for the town. Early businesses included a store and post office. In 1858, work on the Union Pacific Railroad began nearby and by 1860 Midvale had become an important railroad stop. The townsite changed hands many times through its history until it became part of Grantsville Township in 1907 when it merged with other townships within Grantville Township. In 1911, Jens Jensen purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of property east of Main Street in what is now West Valley Village from Danish immigrants John Olsen and his wife Karen Larsen for $1 per acre (0·36 ha). Jensen built one of Utah's earliest homes there - called "Jensen House". In 1923, he donated another plot of land north of Main Street to build the present day United States Air Force Base - which still stands today as Naval Air Station Midvale (NASM). During World War II NASM served as an airbase for Allied bombers flying over Japan; during the war alone NASM produced more than 20 million pounds (10 million kg) of bombs and missiles! After World War II NASM came under U.S Army jurisdiction and became known as NASM-West Valley Village; however, it reverted back to USAF control after military retirement ended in 1992 despite pleas by local residents to keep it maintained as a civilian community with access to education and commerce opportunities outside of Defense Department walls! Today NASM features more than 4 thousand acres (1500 m²) reserved specifically for research aircraft operations; this includes nearly 400 acres (160 m²) used annually during summer thunderstorms byLockheed Martin Aircraft Co., Inc.'s Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Division Test Pilot School! These days you can find plenty of shopping malls popping up all around Western Utah... but noMidvale! Midvale was founded in 1875 by Mormon settlers. The town quickly became a center for ranching and agriculture, and Midvale's growth continued into the 20th century. In the 1930s, Midvale became a bedroom community for Salt Lake City, and during World War II it served as an airbase for the Utah Air National Guard. Today, Midvale is a small city with a diverse population that includes Mormons, Muslims, Jews, and other faiths. Its history has shaped its economy and its culture; today it is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Utah. The first permanent settler in Midvale was John Smith. He came from upstate New York in 1875 on a horseback ride looking for land to stake his claim to. Smith's group built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1876. The settlement soon grew larger than anything else around it; by 1880, there were over 100 families living in Midvale. By 1924, when Midvale incorporated as a town, its population had reached 2,000 people. The early years of Midvale's development were marked by success both agriculturally and industrially. A nursery was established in 1886 by two Latter-day Saint farmers named Waddell and Price; within five years they had raised more than 1 million plants from seeds grown on their land alone. A mill was built at midtown in 1909; throughout the 1920s it produced flour products such as baking powder and sugar beets (a type of beet). Other businesses soon followed: a bakery opened near Beehive Park in 1922 (it remains open today), while an insurance agency employed about 50 people before merged with another company forming what is now called Covidien Corporation (which still exists) in 1941. In 1916 local pioneers James Fenton and Orson Scott Card found oil shale under the town square; this led to the discovery of later gas reserves which helped drive mid-20th century economic growth rates—the industry employing over 200 people by 1955! A post office was established atMidvaletown on Valentine's Day 1908 (later renamed Post Office Square); mail service began operations that year! In 1915 businessman George Stephenson constructed JW Harriman High School—one of only three high schools operated within downtown Midvale during that time period (); he also donated $5,000 towards construction costs (). During World War I enrollment at Harriman increased significantly due to enlistments from nearby Logan Airport; after hostilities ended school buildings reopenedcan accommodate students until 1929 (). Eventually all but one building at JW Harriman closed between 1942-1945 due to lack of pupils or funding (). Afterward many residents relocated away from downtown following rocket firings which occurred nearby every weeknight beginning 1949 ().
